HOUSTON — Tanner McDougal shared insights from a conversation with fellow pitcher Davis Martin, who is currently on an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte. “He gave me valuable tips on handling struggles, especially when things feel overwhelming,” McDougal said. This guidance is something McDougal plans to use moving forward.
The Chicago White Sox brought back the prospect McDougal from Charlotte as part of MLB roster expansions. Additionally, they selected outfielder Tommy Pham’s contract from Charlotte and designated pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment. Pham joined the Sox after a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies for cash. A 13-year major-league veteran, Pham had previously played for the Sox during part of the 2024 season.
Pham shared details of his transfer back to the Sox, noting, “(Phillies general manager) Preston (Mattingly) communicated well about trade interests, mentioning the White Sox.” Pham’s return journey included several minor-league assignments this year. He played for Single-A St. Lucie (New York Mets), Florida Complex League Orioles, Triple-A Norfolk (Baltimore), Florida Complex League Phillies, and Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia). He also spent time with the Mets in April.
“This marks the third time a team has brought me back,” Pham stated, referring to his stints with the Cardinals and Mets. “It’s different being in the hunt during September, and this city loves the South Side team. It’s great to return to an energetic, young team in Chicago.”
McDougal is having another opportunity with the major-league team this season. Rated the No. 7 prospect by MLB.com, he allowed one run, three walks, and hit a batter during his one-third inning debut on Aug. 13 against the Cincinnati Reds. Reflecting on his experience, McDougal recalled, “It’s built up as this huge moment. But after, despite any setbacks, it’s a dream achieved — being a big-leaguer settles things a bit.” Despite the challenges, he managed to move past the experience quickly.
Additional roster decisions loom as starting pitcher for Wednesday’s game remains undecided, although signs indicate Martin might return from the injured list soon. Sox manager Will Venable mentioned that catcher Kyle Teel is progressing in his rehab after a left ankle sprain on July 20. Venable explained, “The plan is to increase his activity while ensuring his recovery.” Teel’s season has been limited, and the team aims not to rush his return, ensuring he is adequately prepared.
