A Utah judge has determined that Tyler Robinson, accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will face trial on multiple charges, including aggravated murder. This decision comes after prosecutors presented substantial evidence, which the judge found sufficient to proceed.
Robinson, accused of the 2025 shooting at a Turning Point USA event, faces seven charges. These include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
“Viewed in the light most favorable to the prosecution, this evidence is sufficient at this stage to support a reasonable belief that the defendant is the individual who shot and killed Charlie Kirk,” Judge Tony Graf stated.
Robinson has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution is also pursuing the death penalty, bolstered by evidence of victim targeting. This aspect of the case allows for the capital sentencing enhancement, as the state has established probable cause.
During the hearing, the court addressed the defense’s objection to the presence of cameras due to the intense publicity surrounding the case. However, Judge Graf denied the motion to remove cameras, maintaining the decorum order’s restrictions.
Kirk, aged 31, was tragically shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. The event drew thousands, and Robinson allegedly fired from an elevated position, resulting in Kirk’s death.
The court proceedings included emotional appeals from representatives of Kirk’s family. Attorney Jeff Neiman emphasized the importance of a swift trial, highlighting Kirk’s contributions to a community rooted in faith and freedom.
“Charlie devoted his life to building a community of over a million young people rooted in faith and freedom. He had hard conversations others were too afraid to have,” Neiman told the court.
The hearing concluded with a request to set a trial date at Robinson’s next court appearance, scheduled for October 23. The court aims to ensure a fair trial while also acknowledging the family’s desire for timely justice.
After the hearing, Kirk’s family expressed that the decision to proceed with the trial is a significant step in their quest for justice. “Today’s decision… marks an important step in our family’s pursuit of justice for him,” the family stated, also acknowledging the emotional toll on Kirk’s children.
