Tyler Robinson, accused of killing political activist Charlie Kirk, will face trial for aggravated murder, following a judge’s ruling in Provo, Utah. The decision comes after Judge Tony Graf assessed evidence from a preliminary hearing held in July, which included 24 pages of notes from closing arguments.
Robinson, 23, is accused of fatally shooting Kirk in front of a crowd at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Prosecutors argue that Robinson targeted Kirk due to his political stance, disregarding the presence of children who would witness the event. The charge could lead to severe penalties, such as the death penalty, life imprisonment without parole, or 25 years to life with the possibility of parole.
During the hearing, prosecutors stated Robinson acted with intent, using a high-powered rifle to kill Kirk in a crowd of thousands. They described the evidence as overwhelming against Robinson. The defense refuted the prosecution’s contentions regarding the charge enhancements needed to pursue the death penalty, arguing that the aggravating factor wasn’t sufficiently demonstrated given Robinson’s precise, single shot.
Robinson also faces charges of obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, potentially leading to additional prison time. He has yet to enter pleas for these charges.
