Conservative voices argue that artificial intelligence is influencing public perception by relying on left-leaning media and politically charged sources. This has raised concerns about the credibility of AI as a news source. AI systems are known to sometimes generate false or misleading information, which can erode trust among users. Critics claim chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude provide information with a liberal perspective, amplifying content from left-leaning sources while minimizing opposing views.
The Media Research Center (MRC), a conservative group, conducted studies on these chatbots and found results that raised concerns about media bias. David Bozell, President of the MRC, emphasized seeing new forms of media bias in AI.
“We’re watching the next phase of media bias unfold in real time,” Bozell said. “Silicon Valley’s shiny new toys can no longer be considered neutral and cannot be trusted.”
The MRC reported instances where AI systems, such as ChatGPT, denied unverifiable claims and showed reluctance to integrate principles like the U.S. First Amendment into their responses. A recent example highlighted AI chatbots overlooking significant controversies involving a political figure, Graham Platner, instead focusing on less controversial aspects of his career.
AI’s perceived bias is not limited to content generation. In 2024, The Atlantic signed an agreement allowing ChatGPT access to its archives, aiming to shape AI development aligned with certain values. Some executives, critics argue, have links to Democratic interests, influencing AI’s neutrality.
Research by the Pew Research Center showed 57% of teenagers use AI chatbots for information, raising concerns over frequent delivery of inaccurate data. Dan Schneider of MRC emphasized the skewed ideological nature of AI systems.
“AI should be a neutral tool for information, not a weapon used to advance a narrow political agenda,” Schneider remarked.
An incident highlighted how ChatGPT reportedly discouraged a University of Cambridge PhD student from submitting work to a right-leaning outlet, suggesting negative career impacts. AI’s advice appeared biased towards more liberal publications, hinting at broader concerns over its influence on media consumption.
Google maintains that Gemini offers neutral responses without political bias. OpenAI and Anthropic have not addressed related queries, leaving ongoing concerns among conservatives about the impartiality and influence of AI systems on media narratives.
