The NBA has completed its investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers regarding potential salary cap circumvention. The league found that the Clippers improperly directed off-court endorsements and income opportunities to Leonard through corporate partners like Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. This was in exchange for his involvement with the team.
Consequently, the league imposed a $30 million fine on the Clippers and required the forfeiture of five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033. Owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension from all team and league activities. Leonard was fined $700,000 for violating league rules, but the NBA did not void his contract or suspend him.
Impact on Clippers-Raptors Trade
The major issue remaining was the status of the Clippers-Raptors trade. In a SportsCenter episode, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported a significant update, stating, “There’s full expectation that this trade will be going down as is between the Clippers and the Raptors. The trade is on track, and both teams can now move forward with getting this deal done.”
Charania mentioned that Leonard acknowledged his lapse in judgment and the distraction it caused. The union, however, believes this situation involved Leonard being exploited by a business representative acting on his behalf, notably his uncle. The trade framework sends Leonard to the Raptors, while the Clippers receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, Toronto’s 2031 and 2033 first-round picks, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033.
Reactions and Future Prospects
Raptors fans have anticipated Leonard’s potential return since news of the trade emerged. With NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stating that no deal could occur until the investigation concluded, fans faced uncertainty regarding the trade’s viability. Now, they can look forward to Leonard joining a team centered around players like Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley.
Repercussions for Dennis Robertson
The investigation’s findings led to a five-year ban for Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s business manager and uncle, from conducting business with any NBA player, team, or league personnel.
