Dylan Sprouse Discusses Childhood Acting and Its Impact

Dylan Sprouse, a former Disney Channel actor, recently shared his thoughts on his child’s acting career in his podcast “Wildmen.” The 34-year-old actor spoke with his co-host Brendan Columbus about the demands and challenges placed on child actors. Sprouse described the experience as “child labor,” likening it to working in coal mines. He emphasized that, despite the entertainment industry’s glamorous facade, it was still laborious for children.

Sprouse mentioned his ongoing “mental hurdles” related to his early career in the entertainment sector and expressed the difficulty of maintaining a career in the same industry he entered as a child. He pondered whether he is still “chasing” childhood in some way.

Dylan Sprouse called working as a child actor “child labor.”

With guest Mark Indelicato, known for his role as Justin Suarez on “Ugly Betty,” Sprouse revisited the child labor topic. He compared acting as a child to a “full office job,” noting that TV work involved “day job” hours, echoing the structure of a conventional workplace.

Sprouse and his twin brother, Cole, began their acting careers young. They debuted in “Big Daddy” featuring Adam Sandler and shared roles in “Grace Under Fire.” Their rise to fame came with “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and its spin-off “The Suite Life on Deck.” Afterward, Dylan took a break to attend Gallatin School of Individualized Study, focusing on video game design. He has since returned to acting but with less frequency than Cole.

Discussing with Indelicato, Dylan noted how each project’s end left a “void.” He felt his self-worth was once closely linked to continuous work and being on set.

His brother Cole has also expressed his viewpoint on their early career. On the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, Cole highlighted how their mother made decisions for financial reasons and due to personal desires. He revealed their father’s wish for them to lead a normal life, contrasting with their mother’s vision. He also mentioned their financial struggles and their mother’s irresponsible handling of money during their early acting years.
