Roger Goodell will continue as the commissioner of the National Football League until March 2031, following an announcement from the league about his contract extension. The NFL’s Compensation Committee informed team owners that Goodell’s contract has been extended for four more seasons, lasting until the end of the 2030 season.
Although the specific terms of the extension are private, a source informed OutKick that Goodell’s compensation could reach $300 million over the four-year period, contingent upon meeting incentive-based goals.
Robert Kraft, New England Patriots owner and ally of Goodell, sent a memo to the league’s 31 owners announcing the deal. The memo stated that the agreement aligns Goodell’s compensation with the NFL’s long-term interests. It highlighted that the agreement is performance-based, with over 95% of the compensation tied to various metrics determined by the Compensation Committee.
The memo was co-signed by owners from the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, and Denver Broncos. Kraft expressed confidence in Goodell’s leadership for the next four years.
This extension marks Goodell’s fifth since becoming commissioner in 2006. By the end of the extension, he will have served as commissioner for 24 years, making him the second-longest serving commissioner after Pete Rozelle.
Goodell’s tenure has been marked by commercial expansion, media rights agreements, international games, player safety initiatives, and a stable labor environment following the 2011 lockout. Franchise values have increased significantly under his leadership, demonstrated by a recent $9.612 billion sale of the Seattle Seahawks.
This extension reflects Goodell’s confidence in the league’s growth trajectory, which includes new television contracts around 2029, international expansion, flag football, and increasing revenue streams.
Despite successes, Goodell’s time as commissioner has not been without controversy. He has navigated issues including Spygate, Deflategate, domestic violence cases, concussion concerns, player protests, lawsuits, and inconsistent league discipline.
Recent pressures come from Congress and government entities, questioning the NFL’s antitrust exemption and its broadcasting model. Goodell, invited to testify before Congress, declined but faces potential scrutiny in the future.
