Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, described the scrutiny of Hasan Piker’s remarks about Hamas as an “irrelevant distraction” on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Host Kristen Welker questioned him concerning the Democratic divisions related to Abdul El-Sayed’s association with the controversial online personality.
During the show, Welker played a clip of Piker stating he would support Hamas over Israel consistently. She asked Raskin if the Democratic Party could accommodate someone like Piker.
“I don’t know if Hasan Piker considers himself a Democrat. He criticized me for campaigning with Callie Barr and Sean McCann in Michigan. This is an irrelevant distraction,” Raskin responded. “No one supports Hamas, a terrorist group that attacked Israel on October 7th.”
“Rep. Jamie Raskin dismissed scrutiny of Hasan Piker’s Hamas rhetoric as an ‘irrelevant distraction’ during an appearance on ‘Meet the Press.'”
Stephen A. Smith has cautioned that Hasan Piker might negatively influence Democrats in the midterms. Natalie Baldassarre, a spokesperson for the RNC, noted Piker’s growing influence in Democratic politics. She warned that his impact might pose a problem for the party in the upcoming November elections.
“The Democrat Party is being led by socialists who are blindly driving,” Baldassarre stated. “If Democrats don’t change course, candidates will have to address socialist views that threaten the country’s stability.”
Raskin’s comments followed his campaign efforts alongside El-Sayed, who continues to face questions about his connection to Piker. Some Democrats have distanced themselves from the streamer.
Piker, who supported El-Sayed during the Democratic primary, reiterated his stance comparing Hamas and Israel during an April appearance on “Pod Save America.” He described himself as a “harm reduction voter,” expressing his preference for Hamas over Israel.
Recent criticisms have arisen over Piker’s comments about American Jews. A report revealed that he warned on a livestream about potential consequences if American Jews maintained a strong focus on Israel.
El-Sayed clarified the streamer’s role in his campaign, stating, “Nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my spokespeople.” Despite calls to disavow Piker fully, El-Sayed aims to engage Piker’s large audience in the electoral process.
Other Democrats expressed various views on the matter. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called the focus on Piker “ludicrous,” whereas Rep. Pramila Jayapal emphasized engaging his audience despite disagreements. Some Democrats advocated for distancing from him.
Fox News Digital sought Piker’s comments, but he did not immediately respond.
