International Diplomatic Efforts
U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff visited Kyiv to discuss peace efforts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Their visit followed talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, aiming to end the ongoing conflict.
Zelenskyy expressed Kyiv’s readiness for discussions through a post, emphasizing the need for peace and security guarantees. He stated, “Ukraine has always been and will remain constructive. We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer. Peace is needed.”
Despite a lengthy meeting between Kushner, Witkoff, and Putin, no breakthroughs were announced. Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the discussions as “constructive, frank, and useful” but withheld specific details.
According to a White House official, the discussions centered on “substantive plans for next steps,” with potential announcements in the coming weeks. The U.S. team anticipated productive meetings in Ukraine.
Challenges in Ongoing Negotiations
The visit to Kyiv comes amid U.S. efforts to rekindle peace negotiations in the nearly-five-year conflict initiated by Russia’s 2022 invasion. Recent diplomacy has stalled as U.S. attention shifted to Middle Eastern conflicts.
Significant differences persist, particularly over territorial disputes in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Kyiv resists Russian demands for withdrawal from these areas under Ukrainian control.
Moscow’s Perspective
Moscow shared its battlefield assessment with the U.S. delegation, expanding discussions beyond war. Ushakov remarked that “economic issues and potentially large, mutually beneficial joint projects” were explored in detail.
President Donald Trump dispatched Kushner and Witkoff to assess the feasibility of peace. “We have an idea for peace,” Trump stated, praising their negotiating skills and expressing optimism for successful negotiations.
Ceasefire and Ongoing Conflicts
Amid peace efforts, Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange drone and missile attacks. Despite agreeing to pause strikes on each other’s capitals during talks, both sides reported overnight attacks.
