Rob Lowe recalled facing stiff competition for major roles in the 1980s and 1990s, with one notable rival repeatedly taking parts he eyed. ‘That dastardly Tom Cruise was always a nemesis,’ Lowe told the New York Post.
Lowe remembers reading scripts for movies like ‘Jerry Maguire’ and ‘Top Gun’ and seeing Cruise cast as the lead. Despite these setbacks, Lowe carved out a successful career with the Brat Pack, starring in ‘St. Elmo’s Fire,’ ‘The Outsiders,’ and ‘Oxford Blues.’
However, he missed out on roles in John Hughes films, which he regrets. ‘John Hughes never got what I was selling,’ Lowe said, noting that he was never considered for movies like ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.’
Lowe explained his theory for this, believing he was already too well-known for Hughes’ films, which often featured lesser-known actors who became stars.
Despite these early Hollywood rivalries and missed opportunities, Lowe’s career flourished. He later earned critical acclaim as Sam Seaborn on ‘The West Wing,’ receiving Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. His comedic talent shone as Chris Traeger on ‘Parks and Recreation.’
Lowe’s journey reflects an enduring career that adapted over time, moving beyond teen heartthrob roles to significant performances in film, television, and streaming.
