The Bay to Brooklyn Memorial Bike Ride is a cross-country journey commemorating the 343 firefighters who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. This year, the ride spans 45 days and features 20 dedicated firefighters, each contributing unique experiences and character to the journey.
Among the riders is John Byrne, Deputy Chief at California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Known for his humor and perseverance, Byrne encountered a bizarre series of flat tires during the ride, highlighting the unpredictable challenges of such an extensive journey. Despite facing issues like delaminating shoes and losing bike components, Byrne maintains his positive outlook.
The ride was founded in 2011 by retired Santa Clara Driver-Engineer Darrell Sales Sr. It emerged from a conversation with his son on how to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Opting for regular bicycles instead of motorbikes, Sales Jr. and Sr. established the unique memorial ride involving first responders nationwide.
Phil Hasier, a Merrillville Fire captain, participated for the first time, inspired by his experience during the 20th anniversary ride in 2021. His dedication and passion for off-road biking were key to his decision to join the journey from California to Ground Zero in New York City.
Team member Dave Lombardo highlights the camaraderie among the riders, comparing it to a ‘rolling firehouse’ supported by family. John Berlow, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant, shares similar sentiments, emphasizing the supportive nature of the team during challenging stretches.
Riders engage in deep conversations along the way, tackling questions about bravery and sacrifice. Steve Winter, a retired Ventura County battalion chief, reveals their discussions about the monumental actions of 9/11 firefighters.
Merrillville Fire Chief Ed Yerga expresses pride in Hasier and the support firefighters offer each other. The ride promotes unity and honors the fallen heroes by bringing communities together, teaching and learning from each stop along the route.
