The political landscape in New Hampshire is highly competitive as polls close for the Democratic and Republican Senate nominations. This race could determine Republican control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
Democratic Primary: Manzur vs. Pappas
Karishma Manzur, known for her socialist alignment, aims to challenge four-term Representative Chris Pappas in the Democratic primary. Previously considered an underdog, Manzur gained traction recently as New Hampshire became a focal point due to several far-left victories during the primary season.
Manzur’s platform includes universal healthcare, raising the minimum wage to at least $20 per hour, abolishing ICE, and halting military aid to Israel over alleged actions against Palestinians. Her criticism of Pappas extends to accusing him of being a “genocide enabler” due to his connections with pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.
Pappas defends his stance, citing Israel as an important U.S. ally, despite disagreements with Israel’s leadership. He focuses on appealing to voters seeking pragmatic solutions beyond left-wing or right-wing divisions.
Republican Primary: Sununu vs. Brown
On the Republican side, former senators John E. Sununu and Scott Brown vie for the GOP nomination. Sununu, endorsed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune and others, faces criticism from Brown, who has gained support from Trump’s base, highlighting alleged Trump influence on Sununu.
Despite this, Sununu emphasizes representing New Hampshire locals and maintaining focus on local issues rather than national endorsements. Brown also questions the trade policies with Canada established by the Trump administration.
Congressional Races
In New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, Stefany Shaheen engages in a heated campaign against Maura Sullivan and progressive Carleigh Beriont for the Democratic nomination. For Republicans, Anthony DiLorenzo and Hollie Noveletsky lead, with State Rep. Brian Cole also in the running.
In the state’s 2nd Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Maggie Goodlander faces opposition from Paige Beauchemin, while Lily Tang Williams leads among Republican contenders.
Gubernatorial Race
Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte seeks re-election without interference in her bid, while Cinde Warmington runs unopposed for the Democratic nomination.
This political scene underscores the complexities and ideological battles echoing on both sides of the spectrum during New Hampshire’s primary contests.
