Pilots Lost Control Leading to Fatal Crash of Amazon Cargo Jet
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators revealed a sequence of events that led to a tragic runway incident involving an Amazon cargo jet at Miami International Airport. On Sunday, the plane overran the runway, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. During the final seconds before the crash, the pilots appeared to lose control and momentarily considered aborting the landing.
The NTSB timeline indicates that the pilots lost significant runway length and valuable time before the aircraft ran off the runway, struck two vehicles, and crossed a public road. Steven Arroyo, an aviation expert and retired United Airlines pilot, commented, “You either land or you go around. You don’t land, attempt to go around, and then get back to landing again,” unless there was a mechanical issue. He remarked that he had never encountered a situation like this before.
Further insights are expected with the imminent release of the cockpit voice recorder transcript. The NTSB plans to publish the readout and interview the aircraft’s pilots soon, according to Jennifer Homendy, the board chair.
In a news conference held late on Tuesday, Chihoon Shin, the lead crash investigator, outlined the events during the last 30 seconds recorded by the flight data recorder. These recorders cease operation when the aircraft loses its electric power supply, as typically occurs during a crash.
