Remembering the Impact of Charlie Kirk
In 2017, I met Charlie Kirk in a Los Angeles hotel lobby. I had reached out to him several times, suggesting collaboration, but received little response. At that time, rumors of this energetic young figure aiming to reclaim college campuses for conservatives were circulating.
After some negative press, Charlie finally responded, and we arranged to meet. At 6’5″, he towered over most people, and his presence made an even larger impression. His eyes surveyed the room, maintaining focus on our conversation while acknowledging the surroundings. It was clear Charlie could multitask effortlessly, a skill I admired.
He valued time and didn’t waste it. We delved into discussions quickly, revealing his pragmatic nature. Despite an oversized suit and shoes more suited for an older man, something about the 23-year-old felt different. In a world of style-over-substance political figures, Charlie was the opposite. He was ready to work hard.
By the end of that meeting, we agreed to collaborate, cementing a partnership and friendship that grew over eight years.
In 2019, we launched “The Charlie Kirk Show,” initially planned as a weekly podcast. However, Charlie’s dedication transformed it into a larger endeavor. The podcast expanded to multiple episodes a week, eventually evolving into a nationally syndicated radio program, and by 2022, a successful television show as well.
Throughout the last year, reflections on Charlie often miss how improbable his success was. As an 18-year-old without resources, he established TPUSA. Driven by aspirations to emulate his hero, Rush Limbaugh, he initiated his radio show. His initiatives, like TPUSA Faith, aimed to engage and mobilize young Americans.
Charlie founded TPUSA, living off minimal speaking fees and friends’ hospitality. He handled multiple organizational roles, spending over 300 days a year traveling and cultivating support. Even when faced with financial challenges, Charlie’s faith and determination saw him through.
Physical challenges also tested him. Years of travel affected his health, leading to a significant back issue. Despite medical advice to rest, he continued, delivering speeches despite intense pain.
Criticism was constant, aimed at both him and TPUSA. Yet, he always remained resolute. Charlie’s efforts in voter outreach and his belief in reaching young voters showcased his determination. His vision for “Chase the Vote” significantly impacted voter outreach within Arizona, setting new standards for engagement.
Charlie’s methods included addressing misconceptions among college students across the nation. Events labeled “Prove Me Wrong” began with modest crowds and grew to attract thousands. His debates, viewed billions of times, influenced a generation’s perception of conservative values.
Detractors underestimated Charlie’s work ethic and tenacity. He tirelessly built a foundation to counter generational challenges. He embraced every setback as an opportunity to reinforce his resolve.
Charlie Kirk’s legacy is that of a determined, resilient leader who inspired many. Though described as a “happy warrior,” his relentless dedication and belief in America’s potential stood out. One year after his passing, his life reminds us to face our struggles without surrendering. Charlie’s favorite motto, “Never surrender,” encourages us forward.
Charlie Kirk’s journey is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and unwavering faith in his mission.
