Mayor Mamdani’s Plan to Improve NYC Public Housing
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is focusing on the issues facing New York City’s public housing. Previously, his attention was on rent stabilization for around one million apartments. Now, his aim is to address conditions affecting the 300,000 residents in the city’s public housing.
On Tuesday, Mamdani plans to unveil a detailed strategy to tackle these challenges through the New York City Housing Authority. The initiative will implement several key measures:
- Utilizing two financial tools to generate funds for necessary repairs.
- Restoring thousands of currently vacant apartments.
- Constructing new housing on city-owned land by the housing authority.
Leila Bozorg, the deputy mayor for housing and planning, stated that the mayor is committed to prioritizing NYCHA residents. “We believe this approach is comprehensive. It aims to reduce the daily challenges faced by NYCHA residents, including addressing maintenance backlogs,” she explained.
