Thousands of Russians have built a community in Phuket after fleeing Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Though thriving, there is a sense of transience in their lives.
Ekaterina Mittsel, a mother living in Phuket, manages a busy schedule for her daughter. Her activities include choir, gymnastics, and Russian lessons, in case they return to Russia. The Mittsels are part of the estimated 30,000 Russian émigrés on the island, chosen for its calmer environment compared to Bali, lower cost than Dubai, and greater friendliness than Europe.
“We meet our friends here more often than in Moscow,” said Ekaterina Mittsel, enjoying the view from their bungalow on Phuket’s southern coast.
Russian culture is evident in Phuket. The island hosts Russian saunas, grocery stores with familiar ingredients, and daily flights from Aeroflot. Restaurants serve traditional dishes like cold borscht. Even Russian pop stars include Phuket in their international tour schedules.
In their Rawai home, Ekaterina and her daughter Alisa live surrounded by influences from both Russian and American cultures. Alisa’s bedroom walls display her paintings of Russian fairy tale characters and American cartoons.
