Baptist pastors in Washington, D.C. are pushing back against proposed legislation that would allow commercial operation of driverless cars. They view autonomous vehicles as contrary to human values.
The Rev. A. Michael Charles Durant, pastor at Tenth Street Baptist Church, expressed his concerns about the technology and its impact on society. He believes that Jesus would oppose innovations that disregard human interaction and connectivity.
The D.C. Council is currently considering the bill, which would legalize driverless cars for commercial use in the district. Waymo is among the companies involved, having deployed robotaxis in places like San Francisco.
“Jesus either walked or rode a beast, Durant said. He would be opposed to technology that was opposed to people, and I believe that this is opposed to people.”
The religious perspective on this issue highlights broader concerns about the implications of artificial intelligence and automation on daily life.
