Michigan Wolverines Upset Oklahoma in Hard-Fought Victory

The Michigan Wolverines secured a hard-fought 17-10 victory over 11th-ranked Oklahoma in Ann Arbor. This win comes just a week after a controversial triumph over Western Michigan, where an additional second was mistakenly added to the clock, allowing for a game-winning play. Many critics had dismissed the Wolverines, but head coach Kyle Whittingham and his team answered with determination.

Resilient Performance

Head coach Kyle Whittingham engaged with referees during the first half of the game against Oklahoma at Michigan Stadium on September 12, 2026. Michigan’s performance reflected a classic Big Ten style. Despite Oklahoma’s well-regarded defense, the Wolverines excelled, putting pressure on Oklahoma’s offense throughout the game.

Defensive Struggles for Oklahoma

Quarterback John Mateer, considered a potential Heisman contender, struggled against Michigan’s defense, completing only 52% of his passes and throwing an interception. Michigan’s defense remained formidable, dominating Oklahoma’s offense at crucial moments.

Bryce Underwood Shines

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood rebounded with a strong performance, especially in the ground game. Underwood carried the ball 18 times, accumulating 87 yards and scoring a touchdown in the first quarter, putting Michigan ahead early. His efforts helped Michigan secure a significant victory.

Unexpected Victory

Oklahoma had entered the game as 5.5-point favorites and eyed a spot in the College Football Playoff. This loss serves as a reality check for the Sooners. For Michigan, the win contributes to their 2-0 record at the season’s outset. Considering their recent challenges, even optimistic fans may not have anticipated this early-season success.

This victory not only puts Michigan on a promising path but also lays the foundation for potential CFP contention. A win against a top-tier team like Oklahoma boosts Michigan’s prospects for the season ahead.
