Honoring Officer Dorelle C. Brandon
The Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District, located in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, held a dedication and renaming ceremony on September 12, 2026, to honor Officer Dorelle C. Brandon. This event marked the commemoration of the first female Chicago police officer who tragically lost her life in the line of duty.
Officer Brandon’s end of watch was on January 25, 1984. Her sacrifice is remembered through the renaming of the 3rd District Grand Crossing Police Station, now unveiled in her honor.
A poignant moment occurred during the ceremony when retired Chicago Police Officer Matthew Brandon, husband of the late officer, wiped a tear as the dedication unfolded.
Tributes and Remembrances
Throughout the ceremony, various tributes were held to celebrate Officer Brandon’s life and contribution. A police officer displayed a remembrance ribbon, reflecting the respect and admiration for the fallen hero.
Retired Chicago Police Officer Rita Pritchett performed a song, adding emotional depth to the remembrance ceremony.
A Tragic History
Officer Dorelle C. Brandon died due to an accidental shooting by her partner during a drug raid on the city’s Far South Side. She was not only the first female officer in Chicago to die on duty but also the second officer to be killed in the department within nine days during similar operations.
Family and Community Involvement
The presence of family members added warmth to the occasion. Officer Tanya Scott, niece of Dorelle C. Brandon, participated by pinning a remembrance pin on Marvin Brandon, Dorelle’s stepson, before the ceremony commenced.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s attendance highlighted the significance of the ceremony. Andrea Liggins, sister of the late officer, traveled from Orlando to be part of this dedication ceremony, further highlighting the deep bond within Brandon’s family.
