A former staffer of Senator John Fetterman claims the Pennsylvania Democrat needed prodding to fulfill many of his essential duties. This adds new weight to concerns highlighted in a recent Wall Street Journal article suggesting Fetterman’s detachment from his work on Capitol Hill. The ex-staffer, who remains anonymous for job-related reasons, confirmed the Wall Street Journal’s portrayal of Fetterman as displaying limited interest in his responsibilities.
Allegations align with claims from an X account called “Former Fetterman Staffers,” operated by former aides. The account aims to inform Pennsylvanians about Fetterman’s behavior, asserting the Journal’s article barely skims the surface. Two former aides authenticated the account to The New York Times as a group effort.
In a recent post, “Former Fetterman Staffers” announced plans to share more insights and evidence upon the Senate’s return on September 14. They suggested the senator could delay these updates by skipping Monday’s votes. The account has gained over 162,000 followers since debuting after the Journal’s allegations of Fetterman’s diminished interest in congressional duties.
Fetterman criticized the profile as a “hit piece” based on disgruntled staffers’ accounts and claimed the report included falsehoods and misrepresented context.
The allegations reveal a pattern of disengagement starting last September. Claims suggest Fetterman prioritizes media over constituency work and meetings. For instance, Fetterman allegedly ignored a meeting with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia officials concerning Medicaid cuts.
The ex-staffer told Newsweek that Fetterman’s behavior suggested minimal empathy, describing him as sometimes needing to be “begged” for job basics. According to reports, Fetterman’s office maintains a high turnover rate, now the third-highest in the Senate behind Senators Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis.
LegiStorm data shows that while Fetterman’s turnover appears notable due to senior staff exits, it aligns with the Senate’s average rate.
Furthermore, Fetterman’s political stance appears to shift away from Democrats, hinting at disenchantment with his party’s left wing and aligning increasingly with Republican views. This shift affected his voter appeal, with recent polls indicating he enjoys more favor among Republicans than Democrats.
While speculation arises over Fetterman potentially leaving his party, he denies any immediate plans. Nevertheless, his recent GOP convention appearance suggested alignment with certain Republican principles, amplifying questions about his political trajectory.
