Patrick Mahomes silenced critics on “Monday Night Football” by leading the Kansas City Chiefs in a 10-play, 46-yard opening drive against the Denver Broncos. The drive culminated in Mahomes running a 15-yard touchdown, giving the Chiefs an early lead.
Mahomes faced a significant challenge after tearing his ACL during a December game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Remarkably, he returned from surgery in time for Week 1. According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Mahomes expedited his recovery by opting for surgery immediately, before his knee began to swell. Mahomes noted he was ready to return by the start of mandatory minicamp.
“Said on yesterday’s NFL on FOX Patrick Mahomes did something to attack his recovery from torn ACL and LCL, he immediately flew to Dallas to get the surgery BEFORE it swelled and filled with inflammation,” Glazer posted on X. “Usually players wait til AFTER the swelling and inflammation subsides.”
This quick action allowed Mahomes to begin rehabilitation soon after the injury. His rehabilitative efforts were aggressive; by the first week of June, he was confident in his readiness. Glazer praised Mahomes for his unique injury recovery approach, underscoring his determination and resilience.
During the game, Mahomes did not show signs of his previous knee injury. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, achieving two touchdowns despite one interception. On the ground, he added 23 yards and another touchdown, aiding the Chiefs in their decisive 31-10 victory over the Broncos.
While Mahomes excelled, the Chiefs benefited from running back Kenneth Walker III as well. Walker, who joined the team as a free agent, contributed significantly with 173 yards and one touchdown, spread across 23 carries.
