Stefon Diggs made a significant impact in the Washington Commanders’ season-opening game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Signed late in the offseason, Diggs scored his first touchdown with the team late in the fourth quarter, closing the score gap to two points, with 9:59 remaining.
However, Diggs’ celebration after the touchdown drew a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, which moved the two-point conversion attempt further back. The Commanders then opted for an extra point due to this setback.
Head coach Dan Quinn noted he would have pursued a two-point conversion had there been no penalty. Quarterback Jayden Daniels emphasized the importance of situational awareness, stating, “You just gotta be smarter. We gotta know situations, situational football. That’s on me for not reiterating that in the huddle. We just gotta be smart. There’s a time and place for everything.” Diggs acknowledged his mistake after the game.
The Commanders had another chance to tie near the end of the fourth quarter but failed their two-point attempt, resulting in a 24-22 loss at Lincoln Financial Field. While the penalty was not the sole reason for the defeat, it played a significant role in the game’s outcome.
