On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers faced off in a game marked by offensive struggles. Both teams exhibited difficulties on third downs, penalties, and turnovers, casting shadows over their effectiveness on the field.
Atlanta had a tough time, going 2-for-12 on third downs. They lost 121 yards due to penalties and sacks. Additionally, they turned the ball over twice, with one costly turnover leading to a T.J. Watt pick-six that shifted the game’s balance towards the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium.
Pittsburgh faced similar challenges, converting only 3-of-13 third-down attempts and losing 67 yards from penalties and sacks. Failed fourth-down conversions and a fumble further hindered their performance.
Shawn Syed from Sumer Sports reported that the game ranks at 1,069 out of 1,097 games analyzed in Total EPA, placing it in the third percentile for performance quality.
Atlanta’s underperformance might not be entirely unexpected given Cooper Rush’s role as starting quarterback, filling in after injuries sidelined Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. Despite having strong players like Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts, they struggled to achieve even an average performance.
On the other hand, the Steelers’ disappointing show was unforeseen, with DK Metcalf securing just four catches from multiple targets, Rico Dowdle averaging under two yards per rush, and Aaron Rodgers completing 24 of 40 pass attempts.
Fans anticipating upcoming matches have reasons for apprehension. The Steelers are set to play against the reigning conference champion New England Patriots, which poses a significant challenge. Meanwhile, the Falcons will face the Carolina Panthers, a team recently defeated at home by the Chicago Bears, allowing 59 points.
