The Battle for Illinois’ State Sandwich: Italian Beef vs. Horseshoe
In Springfield, the home of the horseshoe sandwich, State Representative Rick Ryan of Evergreen Park has proposed a bold change. Ryan suggests that Illinois should replace the official state sandwich, currently the horseshoe, with the Italian beef sandwich. He advocates for this due to the rich flavors and textures of the Italian beef, especially when it’s well seasoned and generously dipped.
To support his argument, Ryan enlisted the help of actor Corey Hendrix. Hendrix is a star of the FX series “The Bear,” which prominently features the Italian beef sandwich. The debate mirrors a larger regional rivalry, as it often pits people from Chicagoland against those from downstate.
The horseshoe, while popular in Springfield, is rarely spotted in Chicago. Once found at establishments like TriBecca’s Sandwich Shop in Avondale and 6 Degrees in Bucktown, the horseshoe is hard to find in the city today.
In contrast, Italian beef sandwiches are widespread across Chicago. Notable mentions include Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park, Al’s #1 with various locations, and Luke’s near downtown. Mr. Beef stands out as especially popular, even having a spot at Midway International Airport.
Ryan argues that the horseshoe’s time has passed, likening it to a dish associated with lobbyists rather than a true culinary staple. A recent amendment to the bill allows the horseshoe to hold the title of Illinois’ official open-faced sandwich, but it lacks the characteristics of a traditional sandwich.
This Memorial Day, some famed beef spots might be closed, yet many food stands will offer a variety of Chicago-style options, including gyros, brats, Italian beefs, and more. These tasty options provide an excellent treat for a day off.
