In central Tokyo, a substance sprayed by a suspect in a popular shopping complex injured about 20 people on Monday. The police and fire department responded to the event promptly.
Tokyo police spokesperson Yusuke Koide confirmed that a substance was sprayed at an ATM located on the ground floor of the mall. Meanwhile, a local fire department official reported that around 20 individuals exhibited injuries mainly involving a “smell.” The entire road in front of the mall, situated in the upscale Ginza shopping district, was cordoned off as fire trucks took their positions along the street.
Despite the incident, the mall’s side entrances remained operational, allowing shoppers to continue entering and exiting the premises. Observations from AFP reporters at the location captured scenes of two individuals being placed on stretchers and into ambulances. Firefighters and officials equipped with hazmat suits escorted other affected individuals to specialized trucks for thorough examinations.
Public broadcaster NHK noted that the injuries sustained appeared to be minor. A shopper aged 70 related her experience, stating that her throat began to “sting and hurt” as she neared the ATM. She was initially under the impression that a minor fire had occurred due to the commotion when she arrived. Upon entering the ATM corner, her throat felt “scratchy” and “almost numb.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the precise cause of the incident. Fire department officials remained active at the scene, focusing on collecting evidence around the Ginza 6 Shopping Center.
Although violent crimes are uncommon because Japan enforces strict laws and regulations, they do happen infrequently. Fatal incidents like the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022 and a recent stabbing in a central Japan factory, among others, highlight rare occurrences of violence.
The population still carries the memory of a significant subway attack carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo cult during the 1990s. This attack dropped toxic gas within trains, leading to the deaths of 14 and illnesses affecting over 5,800 individuals. Specifically, on March 20, 1995, five cult members released Nazi-developed sarin nerve agent by puncturing bags with sharpened umbrellas before fleeing.
