Rutgers nearly achieved an unexpected victory against No. 12 USC on Saturday. Crucial errors like a poorly timed interception and a dubious illegal substitution penalty kept them from capitalizing on their momentum. These events might have placed USC under more scrutiny post-game.
Head coach Greg Schiano of Rutgers experienced a frustrating moment during the game. He was visibly upset following certain referee calls. He reacted dramatically after an illegal substitution penalty against Rutgers advanced USC’s position on the field. Schiano’s displeasure was captured during the CBS broadcast.
The situation escalated when USC was mistakenly given a third chance due to an inadvertent whistle. The penalty on Rutgers moved USC closer to their goal. Schiano’s strong reaction included throwing down a field marker in frustration.
Despite the tension, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava missed a pass to force a fourth down. However, he made a crucial 32-yard pass on the next play, keeping USC’s drive alive. Although they eventually turned over the ball, Rutgers was unable to score on their subsequent possession.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns in following drives. Ultimately, USC secured the 42-35 victory. For Rutgers, the game marked an improvement in their season performance after earlier defeats against UMass and Boston College. They managed to accumulate 460 yards, with quarterback Dylan Lonergan achieving three touchdowns despite two interceptions.
USC’s King Miller contributed 102 rushing yards and a touchdown to maintain their undefeated 4-0 record. The Trojans have areas to improve if they aim for playoffs by December.
