For days, my colleagues and I investigated a lead that linked Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev to Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding in May held on private islands in the Bahamas. Initially, we combed through official photos shared by the Trumps on social media and in tabloids, such as Page Six and Hello! magazine. These images featured guests like Jared Kushner and Eric Trump but nothing hinted at Kremlev’s presence.
Turning to Kremlev’s social media, we discovered videos on Telegram that corresponded with the wedding weekend. These videos included scenes from a tropical location. One video showed an outdoor patio with wicker furniture, similar to promotional photos of the wedding site.
We needed more proof beyond a furniture comparison. Eventually, we discovered a photo in an Instagram gallery of a swimsuit model friend of the bride. It pictured wedding guests on a beach, and in the back row stood Kremlev. This was a key piece we included in our story, revealing that Kremlev had funded significant parts of the wedding weekend, renting out a private island and more, according to records and interviews.
Among the 50 or so attendees were Kremlev and others associated with him. Their presence, surprisingly absent from official photos, sparked interest. Soon after publication, the top House Oversight Committee Democrat initiated an investigation into Trump Jr.’s ties with Kremlev, seeking details of any financial contribution from foreign nationals.
Bettina Trump responded with a statement on Instagram, reinforcing that Kremlev is a friend and denying any business dealings with Trump Jr. The couple acknowledged Kremlev’s contributions to post-ceremony events, describing his involvement as a generous wedding gift from a friend.
The Setting
The weekend’s events unfolded over two private islands in the Exumas. Luxury accommodations and breathtaking scenery defined the locations. Helicopters and seaplanes transported guests, who enjoyed oceanfront villas and grand receptions.
The island for the main festivities reportedly rents for $100,000 per night, paid for by Kremlev. The ceremony on Friday saw a limited group of attendees, followed by a vibrant Caribbean-themed party the following evening.
The Caribbean-Themed Party
Guests enjoyed a beachside celebration featuring a DJ, Junkanoo band, and themed decorations. Instagram posts from Bettina described a magical night filled with music and dancing. Kremlev joined just days after a diplomatic visit with Putin in China.
The couple’s Instagram statement noted Kremlev hosted events after their wedding, distinct from the actual ceremony. They expressed gratitude for what they described as an extraordinary gift.
The First Dance
On Sunday, Trump Jr. and Bettina shared their first dance. The evening’s theme included a seafood buffet, entertainment by an illusionist, and professional dancers. Kremlev sponsored the event, reflecting his role in the weekend’s luxury.
Kremlev’s contribution came through the International Boxing Association, linked to Gazprom. Although Kremlev’s office characterized him as a businessman, they denied any political discussions with Trump Jr., emphasizing that their boxing entity had no financial stake in the wedding.
The Fireworks
As fireworks brightened the night sky, Trump Jr. and his wife enjoyed a spectacular display funded by Kremlev. These displays typically cost around $70,000, indicating the scale of the celebrations.
Unresolved questions remain about Kremlev’s motives and the implications of covering wedding costs. Frank Montoya Jr., a former FBI counterintelligence official, suggested that such financial favors might hold future obligations.
