Intense Reaction to Mamdani’s Presence at Pro-Police Event
Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism after being booed at a pro-police event on Staten Island. Fox News’ Bryan Llenas highlighted the financial scrutiny of Mamdani’s proposals, such as free childcare, amidst city budget deficits.
Invitation to Columbus Day Parade Sparks Backlash
The Columbus Citizens Foundation invited Mamdani to the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan. The foundation aims to improve relations with New York City’s Italian-American community. Despite their intent, Mamdani’s past critiques of Christopher Columbus have stirred opposition.
Italian-American Civil Rights League president Mike Crispi criticized the invitation, referring to Mamdani’s 2020 social media post where he flipped off a Columbus statue. Columbus holds a significant position for many Italian Americans due to his role in connecting Italy and the U.S.
Community Leaders Respond
Christopher Loiacono, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, expressed hope for better cooperation with Mamdani’s office. Mamdani’s acceptance of the invitation remains uncertain.
New York City Councilwoman Joann Ariola questioned Mamdani’s motives for attending, alluding to his exclusion of Little Italy from the city’s ethnic enclaves map. Mamdani later agreed to update the map to include Little Italy.
Mayor’s Attendance at Other Events
Mamdani’s presence at events, such as the Ground Zero memorial, has met opposition. Roger Stone urged Mamdani not to attend the Columbus Day parade, citing his controversial presence at prior ceremonies.
Some non-Italians, like radio host Sid Rosenberg, expressed their disagreement with Mamdani’s invitation, calling for the Italian community to take action.
If the Columbus Citizens Foundation does not cancel their invitation, Crispi has threatened to organize a competing parade next year.
Requests for comment from Mamdani’s office and the Columbus Citizens Foundation yielded no response.
