The Indianapolis Colts are entering Week 3, still searching for their first victory after losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener and falling to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. Despite a narrow overtime loss to the Chiefs, a significant setback occurred when one of their key offensive players, wide receiver Alec Pierce, was severely injured. However, his left heel injury early in the second quarter has added to the ongoing challenges for the Colts.
The injury is particularly concerning as it is the same heel that Pierce had surgery on during the offseason, causing him to miss the majority of training camp. The Colts managed to keep the game close without Pierce’s skills, but they face the challenge of coping without him in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, this scenario appears increasingly likely.
On Monday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Pierce is expected to opt for rehabilitation instead of undergoing another surgery, which means he will be sidelined for “several weeks.” If Pierce progresses without any setbacks, he might return midseason, although the Colts may decide to place him on injury reserve during his recovery. The possibility of surgery remains if his recovery does not go as planned.

This situation is a significant setback for Pierce, who signed a substantial four-year, $114 million contract extension with the Colts during the offseason. He had excelled as the team’s primary wide receiver after the departure of Michael Pittman Jr., justifying his contract through an impressive performance last season. In 15 games, Pierce accumulated 47 receptions for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an impressive 21.3 yards per reception. He led the team in receiving yards and marked his first 1,000-yard season.
While expectations were high for Pierce to build upon his previous success, it now appears he will miss a significant portion of the season. As the Colts adapt to his absence, tight end Tyler Warren, along with receivers Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, and newly signed Darius Slayton, are anticipated to receive more opportunities and targets.
