Challenges Faced by Parents Objecting to School Library Books

Imagine your child comes home with library books from school that seem inappropriate for their age. Responsible parents would reach out to the school. But what if the response was dismissive rather than understanding? Over the years, the response to concerned parents or teachers has been the same: “Trust the experts.” Librarians, with support from the American Library Association (ALA), assure that all books accessible to children in schools have been vetted through professional reviews. Those who challenge such decisions find themselves labeled as “book-banners” rather than concerned parents.

Both authors of this piece are experienced educators who encountered this exact situation. Upon voicing concerns, they were criticized. However, recent developments challenge the ALA’s stance. Librarians and their own organization now confess that book reviews are unreliable. A study published by the ALA’s own division in 2026 revealed that librarians increasingly distrust the reviews on which they have relied. A librarian noted, “It’s almost like we can’t go on our reviews.” These reviews, from sources such as Kirkus and School Library Journal, emphasize themes and genres, influenced by the reviewer’s bias rather than the book’s content. The ALA opposes content rating systems, unlike the ratings used for movies and music that consider child-safety concerns like sexual content, violence, and language. Parents reading the books to understand their content still face public criticism.

If “trust the experts” genuinely reflected a commitment to expertise, objections from credentialed experts should hold more weight than those from the average parent. However, this hasn’t been the case. One author was told her objections lacked merit because she didn’t possess a library media specialist certification. Undeterred, she earned one, but nothing changed. She conducted a professional semantic analysis of the challenged book’s text, finding it deficient based on its linguistic terms, and not only its content. Yet, her analysis was dismissed by individuals with less training. Her family’s private disagreement with a school district became a public spectacle. The intense retaliation faced by her and other parents seemed disproportionate to their complaints. This showed the threat her expertise posed to local educational bureaucrats; they couldn’t dismiss her as “just a parent” anymore.

Another author received an optional novel for her students and chose to read it. The novel contained entire sections depicting explicit sexual situations. This prompted her to scrutinize the district’s library catalog, uncovering other sexually explicit titles daily. Despite facing intense backlash, including national media scrutiny, thousands of emails demanding her dismissal, lawsuits, and threats, she remained firm. The school board eventually removed hundreds of inappropriate titles because of her findings. It took three years for the board to remove the novel that started it all, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

None of this is surprising. The ALA’s strategy is a well-orchestrated two-step process. First, objectors are dismissed for lacking the appropriate credentials. But even with the right credentials, objections are disregarded. Expertise that should carry weight is ignored, and the person behind it faces consequences. The authors presented their expert opinions. They held all necessary qualifications, yet when their conclusions didn’t align with institutional expectations, their credentials made them targets instead of legitimizing their concerns. If such treatment is meted out to them, what hope remains for the next credential-less parent?

The phrase “trust the experts” does not encourage genuine expertise; it mandates a predetermined conclusion. Challenging this appears to be anti-intellectualism rather than intellectual dissent. Beneath the politeness lies a simpler truth: Submit to the ALA or risk your reputation and career. This threat no longer withstands examination. The façade has crumbled, revealing the reality behind the mantra.
