Controversy Surrounds Trump and the Kennedy Center Closure
The closure of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington sparked protests featuring Donald Trump-themed balloons on September 18, 2026. Amidst a backdrop of contentious actions by the Trump administration, this event adds to a growing list of issues.
Many find the Trump administration’s actions difficult to track due to their frequency. The grievances include dismantling the East Wing of the White House, engaging in conflict with Iran, and drastically shrinking Big Ears National Monument. Other instances involve converting Hains Point into a luxury golf course, firing the Librarian of Congress without cause, and exploiting the presidency for substantial personal gain.
Among these controversies, Trump’s handling of the Kennedy Center stands out in its seeming impulsiveness. Allegedly, he threatened its closure unless he could brand the center with his name, an act perceived as disproportionate and egocentric. The parallel has been drawn with heads of state threatening iconic landmarks, but such behavior is largely unprecedented outside this context.
Despite being a prominent builder in New York, Trump’s prior involvement with the arts, apart from holding beauty contests, was minimal. His interaction with the Kennedy Center was limited; he notably skipped prestigious Kennedy Center Honors during several years of his presidency.
Trump’s fixation with the Kennedy Center intensified following internal changes. Loyalists replaced public board members and subsequently endorsed Trump as chairman. The management, led by Richard Grenell, reportedly removed significant artwork. This led to declines in performance attendance and financial stability.
Even following a legal ruling against the Trump-name inclusion, the board left the facade marred by a tarp. A storm-induced safety concern allowed them to justify pausing renovations, demanding the change of the center’s name as a condition.
Closing the Kennedy Center would impact the cultural scene in the Washington area and damage a historically bipartisan effort. Established to symbolize grace and beauty, the center reflects a collaboration between Republican Dwight Eisenhower and Democrat John F. Kennedy.
George Stevens Jr., instrumental in the Kennedy Center Honors, reiterates its bipartisan significance. According to him, judicial decisions have confirmed Trump’s name does not suit this memorial’s legacy.
