Young Mayor of Stockbridge Ousted Amid Controversy
Former Stockbridge, Georgia, Mayor Jayden Williams faced an unexpected removal from office earlier this month. He shared with WSB-TV that he anticipated a possible censure, but not an ousting. Williams, at 23, had the distinction of being the city’s youngest mayor, serving under a year before his removal due to scrutiny over alleged misconduct.
Williams’ time in office ended amid accusations of misusing city funds and maintaining a relationship with an 18-year-old high school student. During a Juneteenth event at VyStar Amphitheater in Stockbridge, Williams, the then-mayor, addressed the public. When questioned by WSB-TV on the appropriateness of his relationship, Williams partially acknowledged the inappropriateness, stating, “I would have to somewhat agree to that.” He denied any breach of his oath, indicating that the relationship occurred before his official tenure as mayor.
Reports noted that Williams mentioned the relationship was nonsexual. NBC News revealed that Williams admitted to exchanging nude photos, which he considered normal for his age group. A police report confirmed no criminal violations occurred, as the student was deemed an adult under Georgia law.
Williams confessed to using some allocated funds for personal expenses but clarified they came from the reallocated mayor’s annual budget of $5,000, not the city’s general funds. He stressed, “It was not intentional and I paid it back immediately,” as per WSB-TV. Confusion arose due to the similarity between the city purchasing card and his personal one, prompting him to replace these cards in the future to prevent this issue.
Williams became Georgia’s youngest mayor after running for office while studying at Clark Atlanta University. However, the Stockbridge City Council impeached him this month following his induction into office in January.
