Jim Acosta, the former CNN White House correspondent, has firsthand experience of being barred from the White House. In 2018, his press pass was revoked by President Trump after a heated news conference. Acosta’s access was eventually restored temporarily by a federal judge, leading the White House to relent.
Recently, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico faced a similar ban from White House access. In response, these organizations have filed lawsuits, citing violations of their First and Fifth Amendment rights. Acosta points out that the scope of these bans, as well as the reaction, are broader now.
Major television networks are refusing to take CNN’s place in the White House video pool, showing solidarity with the barred organizations. NPR has also decided not to use audio from White House events for the time being, standing with these barred outlets.
“This action is directed at three specific news organizations, and allowing this sets a concerning precedent,” Acosta stated in an interview with Morning Edition. He emphasized the importance of media solidarity in these situations.
Acosta noted that such unity among the media should have come earlier, referencing restrictions previously placed on the Associated Press for defying Trump’s preferred naming of the Gulf of Mexico. Trump attributes the ban to what he deems unfair and negative coverage. The White House supports this claim with a study by Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group, which stated 92% of the early coverage in Trump’s second term was negative.
The administration contends that the First Amendment allows these outlets the freedom to publish, but does not guarantee them White House access. Acosta dismisses this notion, arguing that journalism isn’t about positivity or negativity but about delivering news that matters.
Acosta questions, “Are we to let truths become lies and lies become truths? Or do journalists provide a safety valve for the public, ensuring access to fair, accurate information, regardless of the political climate, without bias?”
