The world of sports memorabilia sometimes presents unexpected surprises. An ordinary 1990-91 NBA Hoops trading card featuring Mark Jackson, former New York Knicks point guard and later, Golden State Warriors head coach, illustrates this phenomenon. Collectors found a striking detail: two familiar faces in the background.
This particular card has gained attention after collectors identified Erik and Lyle Menendez, infamous for the first-degree murder of their parents, sitting courtside during a game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the New York Knicks. The card photo was captured after the murders, allegedly with seats bought using life insurance money.
Sports business analyst Darren Rovell possesses one of these cards. During “The Craig Carton Show,” he showcased the card. Carton read aloud a label stating, “Valid: Menendez brothers sit courtside.” Rovell recounted the card’s story, leaving Carton astonished.
Both Menendez brothers serve prison terms of 50 years to life, with a parole hearing in March 2027. They appeal their sentences following a denial in 2025.
This story holds a simple lesson for budding collectors: treasures can hide in plain sight. Your next trading card might feature an unexpected piece of history.
