On September 20, 2026, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his teenage daughter Kim Ju Ae, witnessed the testing of a new hypersonic weapon. This event took place at an undisclosed location in North Korea and was later reported by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The test highlighted North Korea’s continued efforts to advance its missile technology.
The state media described the weapon as an “irresistible force,” emphasizing its potential impact on the country’s adversaries. Although KCNA did not specify the weapon type, photos showed the label “Hwasongpho-11Ma-1 flight trajectory.” Analysts suggest the test involved an upgraded version of a North Korean short-range ballistic missile equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle. Such missiles can fly at lower altitudes and higher speeds than conventional ones, increasing their ability to evade missile defenses.
Since 2021, North Korea has actively tested various hypersonic weapons. These systems are part of Kim Jong Un’s strategy to enhance the nation’s nuclear capabilities, aligning with his ambitions for military advancement.
The timing of this test coincides with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s expected address at the U.N. General Assembly. The meeting will likely include plans to improve relations with North Korea. The Korean War technically remains unresolved since it ended with a ceasefire in 1953, not a peace treaty. President Lee has suggested a suspension of North Korea’s nuclear tests or development as an initial step toward dialogue, moving away from demands for complete denuclearization.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has shown interest in meeting Kim, potentially at the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. The White House indicated that talks could proceed without preconditions. During Trump’s first term, he met Kim three times without significant progress on denuclearization. North Korea’s nuclear arsenal development has continued, with South Korea estimating 80 to 120 warheads, while Trump recently cited 57 nuclear warheads. However, the Kim regime has not signaled any desire for discussions with Trump or Lee, despite Trump’s decision to downsize joint military exercises with South Korea, which he described as antagonistic to Pyongyang.
