Democrats in Austin, Texas, are under scrutiny after criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a shooting involving a suspected illegal immigrant. The event took place before a full investigation could be completed and before the individual was identified as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez.
Immediate Reaction from Elected Officials
An ICE officer was involved in a shooting on Sunday. Soon after, Democrats in Austin, including Rep. Greg Casar, Councilman Mike Siegel, and Mayor Kirk Watson, expressed their concerns about ICE’s presence. Casar, part of the progressive Squad caucus, stated during a press conference that Austin’s safety depends on ICE withdrawing from the city.
“It is awful that this war has come to our doorstep,” Casar said.
These comments circulated widely online, drawing criticism from conservatives. They accused Democrats of being selective in their response to crime, especially involving illegal immigrants.
Conservative Backlash
Critics quickly responded on social media. Former Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin questioned why there was no outcry in other violent incidents involving illegal immigrants. Texas Republican State Rep. Andy Hopper criticized the rhetoric, suggesting it should disqualify elected officials who favor open borders.
Response from Law Enforcement Community
Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, voiced surprise at the reactions from city leaders. He felt Mayor Watson’s response was unexpectedly harsh, potentially inflaming tensions further. Farris noted that federal immigration activities have been ongoing in Austin for years.
Incident Aftermath
Following the shooting, Austin Police reported arrests and injuries during protests. Federal authorities confirmed that Garces Perez, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, had a final removal order. During a law enforcement operation, he was shot. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, claimed miscommunication regarding his deportation hearing notice led to the situation.
ICE activities in Austin continue to fuel a larger debate on immigration enforcement. The response from Austin’s leaders has been met with mixed reactions from the public and political figures alike.
