A California family has contributed over $4.4 million to political figures like Governor Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris, amid allegations of connections to suspected spy Fang Fang and Chinese officials. The Yin family amassed wealth from McDonald’s franchises in California and heavily donated to politicians.
Political Donations and Alleged Connections
FBI files describe Chei Chen Yin, known as “C.C.”, as a former associate of Fang. National security experts have traced interactions between C.C. Yin’s brother, Henry Yin, and the Chinese government’s United Front.
Expert Jacqueline Deal highlighted China’s strategy to weaken the U.S. by influencing policy through donations, although there’s no evidence the Yins were complicit.
C.C. Yin stated, “I love America and strongly condemn any foreign interference in our democracy.”
Generous Political Contributions
C.C. Yin is recognized for his philanthropy and success as a Chinese immigrant who built a franchise business. He founded Asian Pacific American Public Affairs (APAPA) to promote community involvement in politics. C.C. Yin insists APAPA aims to develop leadership skills and civic participation.
The family donated nearly $3 million to California political causes and over $1.4 million to federal campaigns, including:
- $364,817 to Gavin Newsom’s campaigns
- $80,000 to Newsom’s inauguration committee
- $50,000 to a Newsom-directed nonprofit
They also supported campaigns for Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Former VP Kamala Harris, and State Treasurer John Chiang.
Connections to Suspected Spy Fang Fang
Recently declassified FBI files detail a close relationship between C.C. Yin and suspected Chinese spy Fang Fang. Congressional interviews associated C.C. Yin with Fang during Fang’s interactions with disgraced congressman Eric Swalwell.
APAPA officials, unaware of Fang’s official ties to the organization, stated her involvement was limited to a local chapter that’s no longer active. There’s no evidence C.C. or Henry Yin knew about Fang’s espionage activities.
Meetings with Chinese Government
Research into Henry Yin revealed his participation in events hosted by Chinese officials, which were documented in Chinese media. His interactions seem aligned with furthering business relations between the U.S. and China.
Foreign policy experts note such patterns of interaction may appear innocent yet are channels for influence used by the United Front.
Despite such ties, law enforcement has not accused either Yin brother of acting as foreign agents or jeopardizing American interests.
Impactful Political Contacts
The Yin family’s connections have intersected with Chinese diplomacy and American politics. C.C. Yin facilitated Governor Newsom’s 2023 visit to China, where Newsom met President Xi Jinping, with Henry acting as adviser.
Photos shared by Henry Yin show him at APAPA events alongside Newsom. Henry also advised Congressman Ro Khanna, who is being considered for the 2028 presidential nomination.
Both Yins have supported Khanna’s campaigns through donations. Conflicting statements arose regarding Henry’s role with Khanna, altering the public perception of their relationship.
