Chicago Bears fans held their breath Sunday after star quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a concerning injury late in the fourth quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings.
With the Bears trailing 6-3 and pressing for a decisive score deep in Vikings territory, Williams moved to his left as Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel pursued him. Williams dodged the tackle, but his hamstring faltered, causing him to fall to the ground.
The injury was non-contact, and given Williams’s apparent pain, fans feared the worst: a serious muscle injury such as an Achilles tear. Initial reports after the game were reassuring, suggesting Williams may miss only a short period, pending confirmation from MRI results on Monday.
Fortunately, the tests showed no serious damage to his hamstring. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported on Monday that Williams avoided significant harm, and the team is not ruling out his participation in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football,” exactly one week away.
This news is a tremendous relief for Chicago. When Williams was injured, he seemed to be in considerable pain and was carted off the field, which was the last thing fans wanted to see from the face of the franchise and one of the league’s best young quarterbacks, especially given his performance up to that point.
In the Bears’ season opener against the Panthers, Williams was unstoppable, going 21 for 29 for 269 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, adding 65 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Before Sunday’s injury, he showcased his skills again despite challenging weather conditions with rain and wind affecting the low-scoring match. Williams completed 16 of 26 for 138 yards with an interception and contributed 42 rushing yards during the intense NFC North contest.
Though the latest update doesn’t guarantee he will play against the Eagles, prospects now indicate he might miss at most a single match. After facing Philadelphia, Chicago will host the Jets, then proceed to away games against the Packers and Falcons.
