The New York Knicks are experiencing glory once again, earning a championship after more than five decades. However, as training camp approaches, the front office must address one remaining challenge regarding roster selection.
The Knicks have offered training camp deals to five veteran players, yet there are only one or two available roster spots. Notably, the team lacks depth in big-man positions behind their starters. Additionally, one of the candidates has a strong connection with a key figure on the coaching staff.
NBA insider Marc Stein highlighted on The Stein Line that James Wiseman has a past association with Knicks coach Mike Brown, which might influence decision-making during camp. Stein noted, “If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will mark a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with coach Mike Brown, who was an assistant for the Warriors during Wiseman’s initial two seasons.”
Brown, now acclaimed as the first championship-winning coach in New York since Red Holzman, appreciates Wiseman’s potential. Stein emphasized that the newly crowned champions require an additional big man to complement Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond.
While Brown’s endorsement is significant, it alone won’t guarantee Wiseman a spot. At 25, Wiseman needs to demonstrate his agility and capability after limited play over the past two years.
The competition intensifies with the presence of wings like Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji, all bringing valuable skills. Each roster decision will be crucial, as none of the players seem expendable.
Drew Eubanks presents a safer option, whereas Wiseman represents a larger risk. The Knicks, boasting experienced players like Towns and Drummond, might prefer reliability. Yet, Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman adds a compelling factor to consider.
