White House Pool Coverage Suspended After Media Ban by President Trump

Members of the White House television pool, including FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News, have collectively decided to pause their shared coverage of President Donald Trump. This decision follows the President’s ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, which were accused of disseminating ‘fake news.’

CNN was scheduled to act as the White House pool representative on Monday. These media pool members traditionally rotate the responsibility of covering the President, distributing footage among each other. In a joint statement, the outlets emphasized the importance of delivering accurate, independent information about the government to the public, stating that no administration should limit a news organization due to dissatisfaction with its reporting.

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting,” the pool members stated.

The announcement coincided with CNN, MS NOW, and Politico declaring plans to file a lawsuit against the President’s intended White House ban. Their joint statement outlined their intention to defend their First Amendment rights, arguing that the government should not dictate press content.

“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” noted the three outlets.

They highlighted concerns that the White House’s revocation of their journalists’ credentials, without proper notice or procedure, posed a threat to free press and journalism devoid of governmental interference.

President Trump addressed the issue on Truth Social, maintaining that the actions were aimed not at the ‘free press’ but at ‘fake news,’ which he described as harmful to national security.

“The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America. It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump posted.

Historical attempts by the Trump administration to prohibit specific media organizations and journalists have been overturned by federal courts.
