UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — Over 100 global leaders are set to gather in New York for a key diplomatic event as the United Nations faces significant challenges like conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, energy market disruptions, and questions regarding its capacity to handle a divided global landscape.
The U.N. anticipates the arrival of 73 heads of state, 45 heads of government, 49 ministers, 11 vice presidents, and one crown prince, according to spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. As stated on Friday, roughly 1,000 bilateral meeting requests and 168 events are set for high-level week.
Addressing the stress inside U.N. headquarters, Dujarric remarked on the “high stress” as delegations prepare to congregate.
“This is their moment to grab a piece of American mindshare for sure,” Frank Ahrens from BGR Analytics mentioned.
The 81st U.N. General Assembly begins its General Debate with the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” However, governments aim to catch the attention of the United States during this assembly.
A fresh analysis, the 2026 BGR Impact Index from BGR Analytics, ranks 197 nations based on their U.S. influence, combining various metrics like economic, cultural, and diplomatic factors. Japan retains the top spot, followed by Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
The stakes are high as U.S.-Iran tensions have escalated, with President Donald Trump addressing the Assembly as the conflict continues into its seventh month. European and Asian allies largely resist U.S. calls for more involvement in Iran, causing strain on Washington’s alliances. Ongoing concerns include Russia’s war with Ukraine, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and climate issues.
BGR’s index underscores the complexity of influence. It factors GDP, foreign investment, cultural presence, and lobbying into its rankings. Social media influence plays a substantial role, accounting for 20% of the index.
Smaller nations can see significant perception shifts. Bahrain moved up 22 spots due to improved U.S.-facing sentiment, while Georgia fell 31 places amid political unrest. Achievements like cultural programs and international memberships help sustain visibility.
The index recognized an interesting case: Germany’s perception improved due to viral social media posts by a German fan during the World Cup, highlighting the impact of authentic communication.
Delegations face a limited timeframe to make their mark, aiming for impactful meetings and media presence over the few days in New York.
