Understanding Social Security Payments and Upcoming Changes
More than 70 million Americans rely on Social Security benefits. These encompass retirement, spousal, survivor, and disability payments. Payment schedules depend on beneficiaries’ birth dates, with the Social Security Administration (SSA) distributing payments throughout the month.
For this week, on Wednesday, September 23, those born between the 21st and 31st will receive retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits. However, individuals who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 and those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) concurrently typically get their money at the month’s start instead of based on their birthdays.
The SSA recommends beneficiaries permit three working days to pass if payments do not arrive as expected before reaching out to the agency for assistance.
Factors Affecting Benefit Amounts
Various elements influence your Social Security benefits. The majority of recipients are retirees. Earnings history and the age at which benefits start significantly impact the amounts received.
For those at or above the taxable cap during their careers, the 2026 maximum monthly retirement benefits are $2,969 at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age, and $5,181 at age 70, according to the SSA.
In practical terms, most do not achieve the maximum benefit. SSA data for July 2026 indicated the average retired worker received $2,085.98 monthly. Across all beneficiary categories, including retirees, survivors, and disability recipients, the average was $1,940.08.
- Retired Worker: Average $2,085.98 per month; maximum $5,181 per month at age 70.
- Spousal Benefit: Average $986.53 per month; maximum $2,076 per month.
- Survivor Benefit: Average $1,634.61 per month; maximum potentially $5,181 per month for a surviving spouse, based on the deceased worker’s benefit.
- SSI: Average $736.54/month; maximum federal payment $994 per month for an individual.
October Payment Schedule
October will bring another series of payments:
- SSI: October 1, 2026.
- Social Security: October 2, 2026 for those who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or receive both Social Security and SSI.
- Birth date from 1st through 10th: Paid on October 14, 2026.
- Birth date from 11th through 20th: Paid on October 21, 2026.
- Birth date from 21st through 31st: Paid on October 28, 2026.
October stands as significant for beneficiaries as the SSA will declare the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to enhance benefits in 2027. This adjustment counters the devaluing of benefits due to inflation.
Projections for benefit increases range from 3.4% to 3.6%, nearly a percentage point higher than the 2026 COLA of 2.8%. The official COLA announcement is expected on October 14.
