President Donald Trump announced that the proposed triumphal arch near Arlington Memorial Bridge will be transformed into a military facility. The structure will be used to store and rapidly deploy drones, snipers, and ammunition.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that the modification came at the strong request of the U.S. military. However, he did not disclose which officials or service branches were involved or provide evidence of an official military request.
This announcement expands the project’s initially stated purpose. Originally described as a monumental gateway and visitor attraction near Arlington National Cemetery, the change introduces questions about security, public access, approvals, and the storage of weapons at such a sensitive location.
Public planning documents previously detailed a roughly 250-foot, granite-clad structure at Memorial Circle. These documents included plans for a plaza, landscaping, utilities, traffic modifications, lighting, and security features. However, the project description did not mention the use of drones, sniper positions, or weapon storage, leaving uncertainty about whether Trump’s announcement will necessitate changes to the design and its federal reviews.
The National Park Service had found that the earlier described project would not significantly impact the environment. Nevertheless, they noted that this finding was not a final decision or approval.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
