The Rev. Brian Konkol took office as Valparaiso University’s 20th president, emphasizing character and faith development in his inaugural speech. At the Chapel of the Resurrection, amidst a gathering including students, staff, and alumni, Konkol highlighted the importance of values over job readiness.
Konkol, in office since January, chose the Homecoming weekend for his inauguration. He stated, “Our graduates seek more than entry-level jobs.” He urged that the world needs more graduates from Valparaiso University, where lives are built for the greater good. This involves a balance of religious dedication and intellectual growth.
Konkol, an ordained Lutheran minister, drew connections between today’s world and the one from which the Lutheran tradition emerged 500 years ago, mentioning technological shifts from the printing press to artificial intelligence. He remarked on the enduring struggle to find purpose in life, echoing Martin Luther’s teachings.
During the ceremony, Jon Steinbrecher, chair of the university’s board, formalized Konkol’s role as president. Konkol encouraged reflecting on whether society is progressing, sharing feedback from communications with students, and humorously dismissing the idea of no classes on Fridays as impractical.
Valparaiso University, established in 1859, has Lutheran roots since 1925. Konkol aims to reinforce these ties while increasing public engagement. He stated that sharing the institution’s successes can guide others and emphasized participating in a movement toward God’s mission.
Lem Cartman, a 2021 alumnus, noted how VU spurred personal and spiritual growth, stressing that education shapes character, not just achievements. One Region President Matt Wells, another VU graduate, emphasized the university’s role in imparting discernment and hope.
Syracuse University Chancellor J. Michael Haynie praised Konkol’s ability to bridge diverse communities. Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas supported Konkol’s vision, asserting that this new leadership could reinvigorate the university by connecting with its foundational values.
