Major League Baseball (MLB) is contemplating a unique event setting, moving away from the urban stadium environment to host a game amid the natural beauty of Grand Teton National Park. While specialty neutral-site games are popular with MLB fans, the possibility of using federal land has led to hesitation from Washington.
The White House confirmed MLB’s inquiry with President Donald Trump’s administration regarding organizing a game similar to the ‘Field of Dreams’ event in Iowa. The official statement clarified that this initiative is neither a Presidential directive nor orchestrated by the White House or the Department of Interior.
The White House specifically stated, “The National Park Service hasn’t issued a permit, and MLB remains without finalized venue plans.” Though visiting national parks is within MLB’s rights, such a game is not currently a priority for Washington.
Concerns include potential wildlife disruptions, such as a grizzly bear potentially entering the field. MLB hasn’t finalized plans, but there’s interest following successful events like the Field of Dreams game, Little League Classic, and others held in unique locations, including Bristol Motor Speedway.
National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands visited Wyoming to see potential Grand Teton sites. However, the White House emphasized this was a regular park tour, not specifically for selecting baseball venues.
Logistical challenges are significant, including building temporary grandstands and lighting, traffic management, and ensuring wildlife like bears and bison remain clear of play areas. Environmental reviews, public feedback, and extensive paperwork precede any construction.
MLB’s special-event calendar is fixed for 2027, so 2028 is the earliest possible date for a game set against the Teton Range backdrop.
