The performance struggles of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye continued during Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coach Mike Vrabel made the decision to pull Maye with around eight minutes remaining, acknowledging the overwhelming defeat as the Jaguars secured a 35-6 victory. Vrabel’s concern was apparent after Maye contributed two interceptions and lost a fumble.
Drake Maye’s difficulties are not isolated to this game. His struggle to maintain control has been consistent, raising worry among coaches and fans alike. In the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, Maye also committed three turnovers. Combined with a recent turnover against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Maye has amassed seven turnovers so far this season.
“Well, my concern level is very high for this football team,” coach Vrabel expressed. “We have to take care of the football. We can’t force things.”
Vrabel emphasized the need for improvement in decision-making, especially regarding ball security. Great decisions avoid handing possession to the opponent, a skill Maye needs to refine for the team’s success.
In a press conference, Drake Maye acknowledged the issues in his gameplay and the need for introspection and correction. He recognized this point in the season as crucial for change and improvement.
“I got to look myself in the mirror and take this as a turning point,” Maye admitted. “What we’re doing out there offensively is unacceptable.”
Despite setbacks, teammates remain supportive of Maye. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez expressed unwavering faith in Maye’s abilities, asserting that the team stands behind him.
“Everybody in that locker room believes in him,” Gonzalez stated. “That’s our guy and that ain’t changing.”
Patriots are encountering a challenging schedule this year. Moves to alter the team dynamic, such as the release of Stefon Diggs and acquiring A.J. Brown, have not shown immediate success due to Brown’s injury.
CBS analyst Adam Archuleta noted that the NFL’s challenges are relentless, stressing that Maye will need to elevate his performance. The Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills next, a test for Maye and the team.
