Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recently attended an event at Cornell University hosted by the Young Democratic Socialists of America. Titled “Students vs. Billionaires,” this town hall meeting attracted a crowd of approximately 2,000 people.
During the event, Mina Petrova, the group’s president, and co-chair Zoe Reisman led the audience in chanting “from the river to the sea,” a phrase often considered an anti-Israel slogan. Petrova criticized Cornell University, describing it as a capitalist institution prioritizing profit over students. Her remarks received significant applause.
Reisman emphasized their stance as anti-imperialists and the need to stand in solidarity with oppressed peoples globally. She declared, “Student activism is not dead. Long live student resistance, and long live the student intifada.” However, YDSA did not immediately comment on these remarks when approached by Fox News Digital.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez took the stage without apologies, joining her hosts in criticizing the perceived censorship by Cornell University. She spoke about various issues, including Palestine and labor unions, urging collective action against oppression.
A recent poll by Fox News reveals skepticism towards the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), with 55% of registered voters viewing the organization unfavorably. Only 30% hold a positive view of DSA, indicating challenges in gaining broader support despite traction among Democrats.
Jewish organizations have deemed the slogan “from the river to the sea” antisemitic, adding further layers of controversy to the event.
AOC’s campaign aims to enhance voter turnout in Democratic areas, but recent polling shows many Americans distance themselves from DSA affiliations. This provides a strategic focus for GOP in upcoming elections, as they seek to challenge the socialist movement’s influence in American politics.
