Ancient Pottery Unearthed in Tbilisi During Roadwork
During renovation efforts on a busy city boulevard, workers discovered ancient pottery estimated to be around 1,000 years old. This find occurred during ongoing excavations in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, located in the Caucasus region south of Russia. The artifacts were unearthed about 20 feet below Rustaveli Avenue, the city’s main street.
Archaeological Insights
Images depict archaeologists reviewing the intricately decorated pottery pieces, along with centuries-old jugs and shards. These roadworks are part of a larger initiative to enhance Rustaveli Avenue by adding new pedestrian crossings, better signage, and various improvements. According to Reuters, this significant discovery was made as workers upgraded the thoroughfare.
Historical Context
David Lordkipanidze, director of the Georgian National Museum, remarked that such findings were expected due to Tbilisi’s rich archaeological heritage. He noted the city’s historical significance as a multicultural hub for different cultures and commerce.
The pottery likely dates back to between the 10th and 11th centuries, a period when Tbilisi was under Arab rule and served as a crucial Silk Road stop. Researchers plan further studies, including 3D scanning, to ascertain the exact age of the artifacts.
Significance of the Discovery
Located at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Georgia shares the Caucasus region with Armenia and Azerbaijan. Founded in the fourth century, Tbilisi has experienced control by various powers over time, including the Mongols, Persians, Russians, and Arabs during the Middle Ages.
This discovery is part of a broader trend where routine work worldwide uncovers ancient sites. For instance, in Italy, the construction of a new highway led to the unexpected discovery of an ancient sanctuary from the fifth century B.C., prompting archaeological investigations. Similarly, in Peru, the installation of an underground gas network revealed two pre-Incan tombs belonging to the Chancay culture.
