The San Francisco 49ers have made significant changes to their wide receiver lineup following the departure of Deebo Samuel during the 2025 offseason and their announcement that Brandon Aiyuk will no longer play for the team. To bolster quarterback Brock Purdy’s options, the 49ers drafted De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round and signed Christian Kirk during free agency. However, the most noteworthy acquisition was two-time All-Pro Mike Evans. Evans, who spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was originally picked seventh overall in the 2014 draft.
In an interview with Laura Britt of NBC Sports, Purdy expressed his enthusiasm about having Evans on the team. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the pressure that comes with Evans’s expectations, especially since Evans has previously won a Super Bowl with renowned quarterback Tom Brady. Purdy is aware of the demands from his new teammate.
Purdy remarked, “Being around him and understanding what it takes to play with him, the pressure it brings is positive. I have someone who demands success and greatness, and I thrive on that. I’ve played with top players like George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, but incorporating Mike into our lineup provides a big target, and he has a great grasp of the game.”
Mike Evans, at 32, agreed to a three-year contract with the 49ers, which could be worth up to $42.4 million. Although Evans was limited to just eight games last season due to various injuries, including a hamstring issue, concussion, and a broken clavicle, he managed to secure 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns.
Evans’s presence is expected to significantly influence the team’s performance during the season. Reflecting on last season, the 49ers overpowered the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card Round but faced a hefty defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, losing 41-6 in the Divisional Round. The need for a strong receiver was evident against the Seahawks, with Jauan Jennings leading the receivers but only managing two catches for 23 yards.
