Elon Musk is stepping into a new position within the Trump administration, assisting the Pentagon in identifying future military technology needs. War Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed Wednesday that Musk will head Project Meridian, a new Pentagon project aimed at predicting warfare trends and requirements.
Musk, formerly leading the Department of Government Efficiency, is teaming up with defense tech billionaire Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, under the leadership of War Department CTO Emil Michael. Hegseth plans to meet Musk and the team at a secure location after his speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Project Meridian has 120 days for an intensive analysis of warfare trajectories and tech needs, ending with a public release and classified report.
The initiative seeks to pinpoint the domains and capabilities the U.S. military should focus on. It will explore avenues for discovering and developing weapons and systems necessary for future American military forces. Musk and Luckey bring experience from major defense contracts and technological advancements through SpaceX and Anduril Industries.
This expertise offers insights into the evolution of warfare technology, although it might lead to conflicts of interest as their firms vie for defense contracts. Hegseth has launched Autonomous Warfare Command, aiming to enhance robotic and automated warfare capabilities. The military will introduce new career frameworks to foster autonomous warfighting expertise.
These plans were disclosed during Hegseth’s State of the Force address at Quantico. This year’s audience comprised younger military leaders like top enlisted service members and officers. Hegseth outlined six initiatives, emphasizing the move towards autonomous warfare and reducing defense vulnerabilities.
In his speech, Hegseth criticized media portrayal of the military, accusing reporters of undermining operations and patriotic values. He stressed the priority of maintaining a warrior ethos and reshaping military culture away from perceived weaknesses.
